Staying organised: a how-to guide of tips.

Although nearly always a semi-rhetorical question, a lot of people ask me “how are you so organised?” I use my planner extensively, and it allows me to keep control of many things-being a blogger, student, columnist, as well as progressing on in further education. So, for this post, I want to share a few tips about what to do and what not to do, in keeping organised.

  • Do keep a planner, and take it with you everywhere-just stick it in a bag, or under an arm. You don’t have to decorate it, but it can keep track of so many things.
  • Don’t overpack it, however. As you can see, there is not enough space in the planner in the photo-and it was one of the main reasons why that I wished to upgrade it. But on a serious note, it looks all very daunting, doesn’t it?!
  • Do colour code! This will allow you to see what needs to be done, and often months in advance.
  • Do have a wall calendar. (But if you have personal appointments ,also keep it private.) I find that, visually, if anything is stuck in a place I always look at, I will be more likely to remember and recall the information.
  • Don’t get bogged down in all of the finer detail. You can decorate, but that can deviate from the point.
  • Do set reminders on your phone.
  • Do create lists!!
  • Don’t plan every little detail to the inane, such as using a timetable to track your movements, hour by hour. This really frustrates me at times, because I know I have other commitments-I.e a social life!-and then it feels like I have not accomplished what I set out to do. It’s a crushing feeling.
  • Don’t take on other people’s organisation. And yes, I guess I am a hypocrite for writing this-but it drives me mad, I have enough to be worrying about.
  • Do have fun with your organisation!

What are your tips for organisation?

My planner Wishlist…

I am very excited to be getting a new planner: you’ll be able too see my reasons as for the switch soon, as I’ll be posting about it soon. (Long story short, I needed an upgrade, as everything was becoming too crammed into my personal sized planner.) I love to have everything laid out visually on paper, as I otherwise can become very muddled. But this is my Wishlist of what I would like to decorate the new Planner with!

Washi tape:

Washi tape allows me to decorate the pages of the diary, and because it has very pretty pictures, I can ‘theme’ each week. To decorate is something that I find to be really calming. And when I come back to whatever page, it makes me smile. Paperchase have owl washi tape-click here to view-as well as Blue gingham tape-click here also to view. I usually choose patterns that are typically quite dark, so I wished to go for something brighter this time. Hobbycraft have gold washi tape (click here). Plus Paperchase have mint pink! (Click here also.) As you can see, I was almost stupidly excited.

Look at the Washi tape and stickers!

Stickers:

So, yes, I am upgrading a size, because I have so much to juggle now. It needs stickers, surely? These Paperchase stickers are able to point to to specifically important post; by contrast, I just like these stickers because they are rose gold. And there’s also these stickers, which are just too pretty to not include.

img_1112

Even back on this old set up, there’s a lot of stickers!

And to keep track of appointments?

There are these lovely looking sticky notes from Paperchase. (Click here to view.) I tend to add in a lot at the last minute-even to just scribble a note on a post it-which would makes these a great addition. I also love that they can book mark certain pages-just what I need!

Other paper things:

Whilst browsing the net, one tip I read was that, in order to create a new pocket, just simply hole punch an envelope, and put it in your planner. Genius! I came across this lovely looking envelope (click here to view). And in case I run out of writing paper? These yellow refills look lovely.

The planner I have my eye on has tabs for an undated diary (I’m not sure about this format, bare in mind), a meal planner, shopping list, budgeting, and notes. Although some of these I may switch round-maybe with new dividers, such as Blog, Writing, etc-I’m keen to be changing my planner.

Let’s see how this goes,

Washi tape

For today’s post, I wanted to write an ode to something I love; washi tape. WASHI TAPE! (Yes, really. Please excuse how odd this post is.)

img_0987

Can ya see it?!

Washi tape makes my planner pretty; I could sit for hours, just decorating it, cutting it up in bits, etc. And it makes me very happy to see a sudden burst of colour. But Washi Tape, apart from being pleasing to the eye, cheap, and fulfilling a decorative purpose for your planner, also has several other uses.

img_1479-2

I guess I use Washi Tape a lot-I can even sit through films, decorating. It’s what cheers me up. There are even other bloggers who keep samples in their planner, so that they can decorate on the go. But it doesn’t take being really creative-there are so many things you can do with Washi Tape. Here are some posts that I found on the Net:

Washi Tape, I do love you. And I can’t wait to decorate my new planner 🙂

Why I’m Changing To A Paperchase Organiser From A Filofax…

Don’t get me wrong; my Filofax has been my lifeline for a long time now, in organising every role I have to inhibit-the student, the columnist, the blogger, the wannabe journalist. And by the title of this post, I wish not to sound disparaging towards Filofax; it really has been a good brand to me as a consumer.

But I wish to upgrade my planner.

The personal size is just too small now; everything is now crammed into a tiny space. And it’s really daunting to see everything crammed into one page-just look above. It leads me to feel as if I do not accomplish a lot, in spite of the hours put in.

Later this year, I’ll also be taking on more roles; I’ll be working to pay rent, studying for a Journalism diploma, filing stories as often as possible, and launching my blog as a business. (You may have noticed that I switched round the pages, added a few widget, and changed the background colour.) This needs more space!

Whenever I go into my local Smiths, they rarely have any A5 Filofaxes in stock, due to being a small, local franchise. But when I go into Paperchase, it has a wide range…. (you can see where I’m going with this, can’t you?) I can’t wait to show you my new planner.

Goodbye Filofax! (A love letter of sorts….)

My Filofax and I have been the best of friends for a long time now; ever since I moved in 2012, it was from the next year that it truly helped with my organisation. The student, the burgeoning writer, the blogger-it helped me inhabit all of these rules, and embrace them fully.

In my final year at college, it tracked everything-homework/coursework/column deadlines, when I needed to return my library books, what blog posts would be going live daily. And for that I really was grateful, truly I was. It helped me control a lot of things that would have otherwise quickly spiralled out of control. And you know what? At the end of the day, it was like my friend; just sitting, going through events, colour coding, nearly always made me feel alright again. (My Aspergers ensures that I can be really lonely.)

But the one thing is…I’d really like an upgrade.

Everything’s no bcame so utterly crammed into the teeny little book; there wasn’t always enough space for me to write, and what important details were left meant that it became very disorganised. You could even say it was a little bit disorienting. But I like to keep things simple, really I do.

Above, I have the grand count of thirteen blog posts, three events, four reminders, and one birthday. So crammed in!

I ran a poll on Twitter, asking what I should do; I’ve decided to upgrade to an A5 planner from Paperchase. (Filofax A5 models seemed tooo cumbersome, and too out of my league.) A5 will allow me more space to write, plan events, track my finances, keep my blog in shape, etc. I just could not do it in this planner by comparison.

I’m sorry to see you go, Filofax, but it has been an honour-

My Filofax Deconstructed.

I finally made the choice to upgrade my Filofax-and after so much time! For today’s post, I wanted to post one final set-up; after all, as I post daily, Imneed as much content as I can get!

I’ve been using my personal size organiser-the breast cancer charity diary released a few years ago-with a single loop. Whilst it fits into my bag nicely, there isn’t a lot of room for all I wish to do. (The pen is from W.H.Smith, a lovely biro!)

These are the dividers…

  • Diary. Here are all of my appointments, any birthdays, events, blog posts, deadlines, social outings, new releases, etc. And I love to colour code! That way, I can see what needs to be written/proposed/scheduled months in advance, and above all, it can be a very soothing mechanism. (Me as an aspie!)
  • Notes. Literally as it sounds! It’s a random collection of assorted notes-songs I wish to buy, iPHONE related, etc.
  • Projects. Otherwise my ‘blogger’ compartment. Here lies everything to do with my blog-retweet accounts, ideas, brands, etc. And it’s really useful, otherwise I’d be in a complete mess.
  • Information. As a student, I will be finishing my A levels later this summer. This tab contains all of my further progression information-such as NTCJ, University, etc. I’ll be needing it from September!
  • Financial. Ditto.
  • Addresses. Does what it says on the tab.

Overall, this space has kept my life organised, and is almost as if my mind is on paper. I would have been lost without it, but I can’t wait to switch to a different planner.

How do you keep organised?

The Lebister Award.

Whew! good morning. You’ll probably think that today’s post is really self centred, pretentious, but Blog Awards are a great way for Bloggers to connect, hence why I’m writing this for today. I was nominated by Daniella, whose blog you can read by clicking here.  For this post, you have to:

  • Post eleven personal facts
  • Answer the 11 set questions
  • Nominate 11 bloggers with a further 11 questions, whilst tagging them.

Sounds easy, right? Here goes-and my eleven facts are:

1.I was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome in January 2015. Although that seems a long time ago, it really is not, in taking into consideration how long it took me to get diagnosed. (Because, well, to be blunt, it’s really obvious. I was the ‘different one’, the ‘freak’ who was picked on at various times. How horrible.) But I see it as ‘my job’ to raise awareness-because why should anyone be picked on?

2.The last book I read was called The Spy, based on the life of Mata Hari.

3.My hero is Jacqueline Kennedy, because she was a well educated woman, and restored the White House, spoke several languages, and was a book editor for the last twenty years of her life. *I’m always asked about her style-but I like her substance.

4.I LOVE Rock music-Queen, Genesis, Dire Straits…

5.You’ll probably find me in a library, enamoured with a dozen or more books, looking for something to read. (Or maybe with my cat, also reading.)

6.The first record I bought was A Night At The Opera (Queen) in a shop, and Resurrection (Anastacia) online. Quite the contradiction!

7.Of all the people that I wish to interview, Brian May, Queen guitarist and all around really cool person, tops the top of my list. (RT this, and @ him, okay? Ha ha!) I did meet him once, and he seems like somebody who could tell you a good story or two.

8.Funnily enough, my first cohesive memory is of listening to Queen-You’re My Best Friend. (who said I was a fan girl?!!)

9.I love to talk about politics, having taken it as one of my three A levels. Whilst I know that it can be polarising-just look at Brexit!-I think that we have a duty to hold those in power to account, and to be well informed.

10.Feminist? Yes.

11. In spite of the fact that I juggle being a full time student, a blogger, and a columnist-meaning that I have to be VERY organised-I am a very messy person.

And now for the set questions from Daniella to answer! (Still with me?)

  • Why did you start blogging? I saw an article in Shout Magazine, which was a place I could take refugee in, being a lonely pre-teen. (Not a lot has changed.) It looked really cool-and a way to write-so, with the permission of my parents, I jumped in1
  • Who inspires you, not just in the blogging world but in life? Oh lummy, that’s a tough one. Jacqueline Kennedy is my hero, but I am also inspired by Anastacia (I created my own version of one of her outfits recently), Brian May for being just a really cool person, Caitlin Moran for the way she writes, Jodi Picoult for the way she writes and tackles issues, and Lesley Ann Jones, the lovely and supremely cool rock journalist and author.
  • What social media app do you find you use the most for your blogging? WordPress to write posts from, Twitter to post.
  • One thing you are most scared of in life? Dying? (Yeah, about that…) I do believe that there is a God-because there just must be more to life than this-but I don’t want to have wasted the time I have on Earth. Oh and the Tube. Too many people-it’s an ASD thing.
  • Do you prefer a night in with friends or a night out on the town? Depends on the mood I’m in. I prefer town because I can go down to Brighton, and get lost for hours. Everything exciting seems to happen there! But I love to host Netflix evenings.
  • What topics do you blog about most and why? Too many to count! Lifestyle encompasses a lot-so books and autism, I guess. I love books-and you can never be lonely with a book-and Autism, well to raise awareness.
  • Do you find the blogging community supportive? Largely yes. I won’t elaborate as to the ‘no’.
  • If you were an animal, what would it be and why? Always a cat-I love cats!-and my nickname is the crazy cat lady. Apt, no?
  • What is your favourite genre of music? Rock.
  • What’s the bravest thing you’ve done in the past week or so? Probably talking to a lecturer with eye contact, and I managed not to feel anxious at all. (Eye contact is a hallmark for those on the spectrum.) I also can find it hard to interpret what they mean. And yes-I’m being neutral in case they are reading this. But they are such a good teacher-it’s just me being me 🙂 This is something that I find happens frequently, in that I cannot maintain eye contact, but it is something I am overcoming.
  • Do you prefer savoury or sweet treats? SWEET!
